What is the Bonn English Network?

Do you know me?

Caroline

Bonn English Network alias  BEN began as a printed monthly newsletter in 1999 following the British Embassy move to Berlin as well as  the American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand .. the list is endless .. Embassies.  Local expats were in a quandry. How were we all going to keep in touch with one another?  The many international and English-speaking clubs and associations  wondered how they could attract new  members and promote their events.  So I  started publishing a simple A4 sized newslettter in bright pink (easy to find !) and called it Bonn English Newsletter.

Alex at the English Shop in Cologne sponsored a six month trial of KEN (K for Cologne) for  customers which is how John  Hurd who picked up a KEN in the English Shop and I connected.  Eventually BEN went online.

Do you know this person?

John

John Hurd has been writing & reviewing regularly for BEN for about five years.  He is a keen photographer and his band reviews are extremely popular with the bands as well as BEN readers. l

The Webmaster is Steve – another Brit in Bonn – there are a lot of us about.  Hope you enjoy our articles and do let us have your features, views, news.

Seven Suggestions for Days Out of Bonn

Here are seven suggestions for a day out by Petra Brockman – many thanks!

Outings!
A pleasant day out for the whole family is a trip to the Vulkan Express” Brohltalbahn Brohl – Engeln. It is a narrow-track railway train which runs at a speed of 20 km/h from Brohl on the Rhine to Engeln in the Eifel. Along the scenic route, you will pass several castles, a monastery, interesting slate and volcanic tuff rock formations and cross the Brohl valley via a viaduct which is 120 metres long and 12 metres high.

The railway carriages are pulled by steam- and diesel locomotives, the entire trip is 18 km long.

For more information, times, prices and how to get to the station, please visit the website: http://www.vulkan-express.de/english.htm

If you like it a bit more exciting, you can take off at the airport in Bonn-Hangelar. You can let someone else fly, enjoy the scenery and

take some photographs – or you can be the pilot of a four-seater airplane. Flights last between 30 and 60 minutes, prices range from EUR 80 ot EUR 155 (depending on time and distance), and EUR 185 if you want to fly yourself.

For further information, please visit the website: http://www.rundflug-welt.de/

Or you may prefer to go underground instead of up in the air. Then you should visit the  tunnels of the “Besucherbergwerg Grube Silberhardt”. The mine was said to have been built in the 13th century. In official records, it was first mentioned in the 17th century, and over the decades closed and re-opened several times. In the 1990s, the upper mine was turned into a museum, where you can walk 160 metres into the mine and see original tools, equipment and even the old carriages.

The address is:

Besucherbergwerk

Grube Silberhardt und Bergbauwanderweg

Eisenbergstrasse

51570 Windeck-Öttershagen

You can find further information and directions on the website:
www.grube-silberhardt.de/

Another worthwhile trip for the entire family takes you to another museum: The open-air museum in Kommern. The museum documents local life as it used to be. Ca. 60 buildings from all over the Rhineland were reconstructed: residential houses, farms, windmills, workshops, but also village community buildings such as a school and bakery, a dance hall and a chapel. The oldest buildings date from the 16th century, the most recent ones go back to the first half of the 20th century.

The address is:
Rheinisches Freilichtmuseum – Landesmuseum für Volkskunde Kommern
Auf dem Kahlenbusch
D-53894 Mechernich-Kommern
Tel.: 02443-9980-0

For further information, opening times, directions etc., please see the website: www.lvr.de/FachDez/Kultur/Museen/Freilichtmuseum+Kommern/englische_version/

************************************************************

If you would like to stock up on some cash before your christmas shopping sprees, you may want to try your luck at the “Spielbank Bad Neuenahr”. Here, you find French Roulette, American Roulette, Black Jack, Baccara and slot machines as well as food and drink.

Please refer to the website for further information:
www.spielbank-bad-neuenahr.de/spielbank/default.htm

************************************************************

Another outing for the whole family is the “Sommerrodelbahn Altenahr”, where you can go tobogganing in the summer. A lift will pull you up 200 metres while you are sitting on the toboggan. Through a stainless steel half-pipe you will then slide down 500 metres, with seven fast turns on the way. You will be able to speed up, slow down or brake. The Rodelbahn is in Altenahr-Kalenborn, for directions and further information please visit the website: www.sommerrodelbahn-altenahr.de/

************************************************************

If you prefer things a bit more peaceful, visit the game reserve “Wildpark Rolandseck” in Remagen. Apart from beautiful scenery, you will see local game such as wild boar, deer, stags and the like. At the entrance, you can buy little bags with stuff to feed the animals.

In the time before Christmas, on the 3rd and 4th Advant Sunday, you can even fell your own Christmas tree if you show up at the Wildpark between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. All trees are 13 EUR (up to 3 metres high) – you only have to bring a saw, boots and gloves.

The address is:

Am Kasselbach 4

53424 Remagen-Rolandseck

tel.:02228-433

The park is open between 1st of March and 30th November from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. (except Mondays). Please leave your dog at home as dogs are not allowed.
