Former organiser of the Bonn branch of Meetin.org – Heather Lewis – has sent us the following request. If you can help or know someone who might be able to spend a few minutes answering her questions it would be greatly appreciated. Heather needs the information this coming Saturday!
Hi All
As some of you know I am currently in the middle of a degree course in
Business Studies back in the UK. I am doing some coursework on Foreign Entrepreneurs in
Germany and wondered if you could help by answering the following questions?
- What have been the biggest challenges in owning your own venture in
Germany?
- Do you think it would have been any different in your native country?
- Why did you start your own business?
- Any tips to foreigners starting up in Germany?
- What German resources have you used (people, money, specialist advise,
etc)?
I would appreciate it if you could help you could let me know your answers
by Saturday 26th January. Or if you want to discuss over the phone, let
me know and I will call you. If you know anyone who might be able to help
please feel free to pass this email on.
Thanks so much

Deutsch Britische Gesellschaft

Deutsch Britische Gesellschaft together with the University Club Bonn invite members and their guests to a talk in English by Dr. Ian Archer, Fellow and Tutor in Modern History University of Oxford “From Satellite City to World City: London 1550-1720†with introduction by Prof. Dr. Dieter Mehl on Tuesday 14.11.2006, 18.30 hrs.
Dr. Ian Archer studied History at Oxford, and took his doctorate in 1988. Since 1991 he has been Fellow und Tutor in History at Keble College, Oxford. His most important works are The Pursuit of Stability: Social Relations in Elizabethan London (1991), The History of The Haberdashers’ Company (1991) and Religion, Politics and Society in Sixteenth Century England (2003). He has also published a variety of articles on London history, covering topics as varied as social networks, popular politics, charity, taxation, historical memory, and consumption. He is Literary Director of the Royal Historical Society and also General Editor of the Royal Historical Society Bibliography on British History (www.rhs.ac.uk/bibl), a major research tool in the discipline.
This lecture will look at the transformation in London’s position between 1550 and 1720. London’s phenomenal population growth from 75.000 to nearly 600.000 reflected its shift from a technologically backward economic satellite of Antwerp to a major world metropolis in the forefront of product innovation. Contemporaries were always ambiguous about London’s growth: some saw it as a monster city, devouring all, but other more positive voices were increasingly insistent. Perhaps in the sixteenth century London was indeed a parasitic city, strangling provincial developments, but increasingly the positive feed-backs from metropolitan growth were manifest. So why did London grow? Because it was both a capital city and a port. As a capital city it benefited from the increasing resort of the social elite releasing huge quantities of additional spending power. As a port, it already dominated overseas trade in 1550, but the next 150 years witnessed much more import-led growth with spin-off industrial developments, including the emulation and imitation of colonial products. London’s growth had important consequences for the city’s inhabitants: fabulous riches for some, and vulnerability to poverty for many, but London’s social stability was bolstered by the strength of the people of middle rank.
