Englishman Trevor Richards learned Jazz drumming from Louis Armstrong’s ’sticksman’ Zutty Singleton and he still uses Zutty’s drumkit to prove it.
Being a British Band there was rain of course, but there was also some great Jazz too on the KAH roof that had a huge crowd sitting happily in the sunshine and completely oblivious to grey clouds filling up the blue patches above their heads.

Trevor Richards started playing percussion in Kindergarten and even now the enthusiasm shows in his face every time he takes a drum solo. His early career took him around Europe but in 1966 he moved to New York where he received informal tuition from one of the greats of Jazz percussion. Zutty Singleton played alongside all of the early Jazz giants in his time – Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie all had him in their bands to keep the beat.

Richards himself is something of a Jazz expert and has written many articles on the music. His contribution leading to a certificate of Merit for ‘Outstanding Musical Services to the City of New Orleans’ where he lived until the flood there. An Englishman awarded for his services to jazz by the City of New Orleans? – pretty good going, and Trevor Richards is also still going strong as his spirited performance and that of his talented UK Allstar Band on the KAH roof proved.
